Prague is a fairytale destination complete with castles, tiny winding alleys, famous astronomical clocks, and a river dotted with swans. Oh, and it happens to have one of the best bar scenes in Europe. With so many bars, it’s helpful to know about the coolest of the bunch – the hidden gems and local haunts that will give you a truly authentic, special experience. Let’s check some out.
Prague’s Best Local Pubs, Hidden Gems & Speakeasies
Anonymous Bar
It’s not surprising that a bar themed around the Anonymous movement would try to keep a low profile. You’ll have to trust your map for this one as you won’t see any signs or indicators you’ve arrived at your destination. But the cocktails here are well worth the hunt – they’re super creative and tasty, and you may even be served by Guy Fawkes himself.
The Golden Tiger
The Golden Tiger, or U Zlatého Tygra in Czech, is one of the most authentic and beloved Prague haunts on our list. It has a long and complex history going back 200 years, so it’s no surprise the place has a dedicated area just for regulars. Still, there is plenty of room for visitors, and you’ll feel right at home in the bar’s warm atmosphere. Famous patrons include Czech authors, the first president of the Czech Republic, and even Bill Clinton.
U Sudu
Prague may be known for its beer, but that just makes this wine bar all the more special. Known by locals as one of Prague’s best-kept secrets, you may be surprised to find this bar in the middle of the busiest area in the city near Wenceslas Square. Keep going past the nondescript exterior and you’ll find a massive wine bar complete with foosball and a vintage piano, and farther down in the cellar, a maze of different rooms and tables to spend time chatting with locals and sipping wine (or beer, because obviously).
Bar No. 7
Another gem hidden in plain sight, you can find Bar No. 7 tucked behind the National Theater. The laidback spot is a local favorite for many reasons. Their prices are low, especially during happy hour, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Known as one of the most social bars in the city, the unpretentious spot is a great place to cozy up and have a few drinks while chatting with locals and visitors alike. It’s a great place to start the night, as you’re sure to leave here with a few new friends.
Black Angel’s Bar
Hidden in the basement of the Hotel U Prince in the crowded Old Town Square you’ll find Black Angel’s Bar. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a Prohibition-era speakeasy, and their vintage-inspired cocktails are so good they’ve won awards. They expect business-casual attire here, and don’t expect to take pictures, but the feeling like you’ve transported back in time is one you won’t soon forget.
Café Bar Pilotů
Café Bar Pilotů is a neighborhood favorite known for its creative cocktails named after other local bars and businesses. The staff are attentive and kind and will happily tell you more about the drinks and area. Complete with cozy armchairs and a bookshelf packed with books, Pilotů is a great place to relax after a day jam-packed with sightseeing and city-wandering.
Bio Oko
An old-school-cinema-slash-bar, Bio Oko is one of the coolest additions to our list. It’s eclectic vibe is largely due to its location just outside of the city center, and its young, artsy crowd of local students and artists. Enjoy a cheap beer and get comfortable in the array of eclectic seating you’ll find in the main hall (including deckchairs, comfy sofas, and even an old car). If you’re feeling a film, you can catch an indie, arthouse or cult classic in the vintage theater.
Aloha Bar & Club
Aloha is certainly not what you’d expect to find in Prague. This Hawaiian-themed spot is a bit hard to find – you’ll have to head down a side street in the center of Old Town – but well worth it, especially in the winter months, when the bar can feel like an island oasis. Here you can enjoy American and Hawaiian cuisine as well as delicious specialty cocktails with live music in the background.
Hemingway Bar
What list of authentic pubs and speakeasies is complete without a tribute to the pub icon himself, Ernest Hemingway? Naturally, Hemingway Bar is a speakeasy-style pub located in a nondescript area. The only way you’ll know you’ve arrived is by the plain black sign outside with the bar’s name. The atmosphere and style is reminiscent of the early 1900s and the bar carries all of Hemingway’s faves: champagne, rum, and of course, absinthe (experience the green fairy at your own risk!)
