Amsterdam loves coffee – The Netherlands drinks more of it than any other city in Europe – so you can expect some delicious cups of joe in some pretty cool spaces. Let’s take a look at the best.
But first, know that a “coffee shop” is not a coffee shop!
Make this rookie mistake and you could be in for quite a surprise. Amsterdam has both cafes, where you can have coffee and pastries, and “coffee shops,” which are places to buy and smoke weed. You’ll likely encounter the latter as you go about your Amsterdam journey, but for now, let’s focus on the actual coffee shops, which are better known in the city as cafes or koffiebars.

1. Benji’s
Stepping into Benji’s feels like stepping into an urban jungle. You can enjoy their delicious all-day breakfast surrounded by foliage and industrial decor, and we can’t forget to mention their coffee, which comes from a local roastery. When it’s nice out, you can soak up the sun on their beautiful terrace, and when it’s rainy you can cozy up inside – and if he’s there, you might even get to snuggle with the cafe pup, Balto.
2. The Cottage
Cottage-core aesthetes rejoice. The Dutch owners of The Cottage have created an ode to the quaintness of life in the British countryside, complete with pastoral decor and traditional English comfort foods like meat pies and scones. The cottage provides both a warm haven from the rain and a terrace for relaxing in the sun, depending on the weather you get.
3. Café de Jaren
The views at Cafe de Jaren really can’t be beat. Here you can relax at one of their many tables inside or outside, enjoying a coffee, a snack or even a drink. A favorite of both locals and visitors, the place often gets packed throughout the day, but luckily it’s one of the only places where you can call ahead to reserve a table outside – and we highly recommend you do.
4. Lot Sixty One
Another canalside spot, Lot Sixty One is known for having some of the best coffee in the city. They pride themselves on being coffee pros, with flavorful beans roasted in-house and coffee drinks crafted to perfection. This is the place to go for coffee lovers, but also for those with a sweet tooth, as their pastries (both sweet and savory) will blow your mind.
5. Hartje Oost
Looking for a side of shopping with your coffee? This “coffee boutique” is the place for you. You can enjoy a well-made coffee while relaxing in the pretty space or perusing some of the curated clothing, jewelry, and other knick knacks set in stunning displays. Vegan options and welcoming staff will round out your experience at Hartje Oost.
6. Toki
With a unique minimalist style that looks great in an Instagram photo, Toki is an especially attractive addition to our list. Toki also stands out with beans that are roasted not in Amsterdam, but in Berlin, giving you a coffee experience you can’t get anywhere else in the city. If you get hungry, try some of their deliciously healthy snacks.
7. Quartier Putain
A slice of French in Amsterdam, but with a twist. Located in the Red Light District, the aptly named Quartier Putain translates to ‘neighborhood whore.’ The quirky space is tucked away on a cozy street away from the riff raff of the famous district, and features delicious coffee, even better pecan pie, and an actual working jukebox.
8. Back to Black
This female-owned specialty coffee bar has several locations, all of which feature excellent coffee and eclectic-chic decor. The one on Weteringstraat, in Amsterdam’s center, is our favorite though, due to it’s cozy corner location on a peaceful street. This is the perfect place to sit with friends and enjoy a coffee and one of their delicious baked goods.
9. Bar Botanique
One of the most beautiful cafes on our list, Bar Botanique is famous for its stunning green-toned decor as well as the delicious breakfast options. Their croissants are to die for, and the space itself is perfect for spending time sipping a coffee with friends or studying. Despite its popularity, the place maintains a warm, friendly neighborhood vibe. You won’t want to leave.
